FreeRTOS is a real-time operating system (RTOS) for embedded systems. It has been ported to 35 microprocessor architectures. Since 2017, it has been distributed under the MIT license. Prior to 2017, it was distributed under a modified GPL license with an exception allowing the developer to assign modified code of the operating system.
